"Superripe flavors of black cherry juice and blackberry jam give this full-bodied wine richness and depth. It is concentrated and deep, showing dark chocolate and blueberry flavors, with light spicy, oaky accents of vanilla, cedar and mocha."  Jim Gordon

1. Wine Folly mentions how Cabernet Sauvignon is a full-bodied red grape known for its deep color, firm tannins, and rich flavor profile. Associated aromas include black cherry, blackcurrant (cassis), and plum, often layered with secondary notes of vanilla, tobacco, and baking spice from oak aging. In warmer climates, Cabernet tends to develop riper fruit flavors, softer tannins, and fuller body, making it especially bold. (Wine Folly – The Comprehensive Guide to Cabernet Sauvignon).

2. Cabernet Sauvignon from California—where Francis Coppola’s Diamond Collection Black Label is produced—often reflects this ripe, fruit-driven style. The 2021 vintage, grown under the state’s sunny, dry conditions, is likely to show concentrated dark fruit, structured tannins, and prominent oak influence. Wines from this region often highlight the grape’s classic characteristics with added richness, depth, and drinkability, capturing a full-bodied essence.  Personal Review

I recently tried the 2021 Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon, and it definitely contributed to the personal mental image I had for Cali Cabs. As soon as I poured it, the deep ruby color stood out, and the aroma was rich with black cherry. There was also a warm layer of vanilla and baking spice from the oak, with a subtle hint of tobacco or cedar that added depth.

On the palate, the wine was full-bodied and structured, with smooth but noticeable tannins that gave it weight without making it too drying. The fruit was dense and dark—mostly blackberry and plum—with some mocha and toasted oak coming through on the mid-palate. It had just enough acidity to keep things balanced, and the texture felt plush and rounded. It’s the kind of wine that really fills your mouth and lingers.

The finish was long and warming, with lingering notes of dark fruit and sweet spice. I found it to be a classic, approachable California Cabernet—bold, rich, and satisfying. I think it could pair well with grilled meats or hearty dishes, but it’s also enjoyable on its own.

I did not pair this with food.
