"Find initial aromas of blackberry, blueberry jam and allspice. Other notes waft through: boysenberry confiture, baked black plum, cardamom and dark chocolate. Layers of dried bay leaf, vanilla cream and dark fruit bring together silky tannins with a dry finish. Pair with BBQ pulled pork." — Tonya Pitts
1. According to Wine Folly, Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerful, full-bodied red grape known for its firm tannins, deep color, and bold flavor profile. Typical characteristics include black cherry, blackcurrant (cassis), and baking spices, often complemented by notes of cedar, tobacco, and vanilla when aged in oak. In warmer climates—such as inland regions of California—Cabernet Sauvignon tends to develop riper, more concentrated fruit flavors like blackberry, plum, and dark chocolate, along with softer tannins and higher alcohol. (Wine Folly – The Comprehensive Guide to Cabernet Sauvignon).
2. Cabernet Sauvignon grown in Lodi’s East Side Ridge, where Three Finger Jack is produced, benefits from the region’s warm days and cool evening breezes from the Sacramento Delta. This microclimate allows grapes to yield flavored wines with plush dark fruit, smooth tannins, and toasty oak influence. These characteristics align with the bold, fruit-forward style that defines many California Cabernets from warm inland areas. (Wine Folly – United States Wine Region).
Personal Review
I just opened a bottle of Three Finger Jack Cabernet Sauvignon from the East Side Ridge in Lodi, and it was honestly the most satisfying Cabs I’ve had in the past two weeks—especially in comparison to the Prati one I tried. As I poured, the deep, inky color caught my eye, and the aroma filled the glass with rich blackberry, dark cherry, and a bit of smoky vanilla and toasted oak.
On the palate, it was bold and smooth like most Cabs I have tried. I got flavors of ripe blackcurrant, plum, and a surprising touch of mocha! The oak influence was definitely there, giving it that warm, toasty finish with hints of spice and maybe even a little leather. The tannins were firm but not overly aggressive—just enough to give it structure without drying everything out. It had a nice full body and a slightly jammy texture that made it feel indulgent but balanced.
This wine definitely makes a statement, but it’s also super drinkable. I’d happily keep a bottle on hand for hearty meals or nights when I just want something big and satisfying in my glass.
Thank you Kyle for recommending this wine, it is one of my favorites you have recommended :)!
I did not pair this with food.
